With the holiday shopping season in high gear, Alicia Silverstone is blowing the cover off a cruel product that flies under most shoppers’ radar: down.In a new PETA video exposé, Silverstone offers a behind-the-scenes view of the down industry, showing how millions of geese and ducks are plucked for their feathers while they are still alive—a traumatic and painful experience.“No matter where it comes from, down is a product of cruelty to birds,” Silverstone says as workers are shown yanking fistfuls of feathers from live geese and ducks, often tearing open their flesh, which is then sewn up using a needle and thread and without giving the birds painkillers. Another surprise: Buying down can also support foie gras — which is now illegal in California and many other parts of the world — as foie gras producers often sell the feathers of ducks and geese who are force-fed in order to enlarge their livers. At the slaughterhouse, birds used for their down and feathers go through a petrifying experience when they are hung upside down while still alive and stunned with electricity before being plunged into scalding-hot defeathering tanks — sometimes while they are still conscious.“You can help stop this suffering by purchasing only down-free products and encouraging all your friends and family members to do the same,” concludes Silverstone, a longtime PETA supporter and vegan. “This is one simple way to make a huge difference for animals.”Silverstone also sat down for an interview with PETA, in which she discusses her upcoming vegan parenting book, The Kind Mother, as well as how she avoids down. “Even in costumes … I’ve said please don’t use any feathers anywhere …. I feel great not using down and feathers—there’s no need for it at all.”For more information, and to enter to win a down-free puffer coat from hot vegan outerwear line Vaute Couture, please visit PETA.org.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Facebook Meet Dave Martineau. He is an actor who lives in the Niagara Region but travels to Toronto to work. Dave is also the president at DMKL Productions Inc..Dave never dreamed or imagined that he would ever become an actor. Once he turned 50, it all changed for him. Everyone had to reference him as 49.1. He was not inspired to act and just one morning in July of 2015, he woke up and decided that he wanted to get into acting. He began searching for an agent, met with her and was signed with representation..Although he did not have an acting resume, he had been performing all of his life..This is what he had to tell us:.The first audition that I went on (and this was literally the first ever audition that I went on) was for a gaming app and I was to be goofy character. The director said “You’re having a picnic with your wife. When I say Action, you jolt up like your body has been taken over by a child playing a video game and you sing BOOM BOOM.” “BOOM BOOM. Got it”, I said. My ‘wife’ and I sat down on our blanket. The director told us to make some small talk. She said something like “How was your day?” I said “I’m going to tell you something. The director said to ‘Jolt’ up when he says action. Since last night was my first hockey game of the season, there’s not a hope in hell I’m jolting up.” I heard them all laugh. “Action”. I get up. Do my thing. While I didn’t get the main role, they did indeed give me a role in the commercial. The next audition was to be an over the top sports announcer. I got a call back! I thought, This is easy. However, the next few roles called for a little more depth and realized that I was out of my league. So, I took some acting lessons over the next year..Three experiences that I can point to as most rewarding:.a. I ended up getting one of the leads in a musical stage play. I went in to audition for the role of a ‘mean’ producer which was mostly a cameo with no singing – only a few lines. I didn’t fit the role. They then asked me to try for another role. I read some lines. “You’re perfect for it!” I read a little bit more. Me: “I told you I’ve never been on stage before. Now you want me to play this main character who has lines? Who sings? Who dances? Who sings a solo with dance routine? And you want me to do it all in an Irish accent?!” “Yes” Well I did it. Played the role of Harrigan in Dreamlight Studio’s production of Destination Broadway..b. Auditioned for the lead of a music video by a band called Wintersleep. A fantastic Canadian band with a Juno to their credit and had played on Letterman. Called for a small town delusional character. That’s me!!.Got the role. Here it is: https://youtu.be/LorAG1M6Wi0.c. Finally, the third thing is this crazy journey I’m currently on trying to make a movie. It really goes back to 2009 when I was the Publisher of the Niagara Falls Review and volunteered as campaign chair of the United Way of Niagara Falls & Greater Fort Erie. The Niagara Falls food bank’s cupboards were bare. So, under the brain child of Bob Gale ( a local business man ), we camped out for five days and nights at one of the busiest intersections of Niagara Falls to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and poverty and hopefully generate a few dollars for the food bank. There were ten of us: Bob, myself, the current mayor and 7 others..While the event started out slowly, over the coming days, the town rallied. Restaurants pitched tents around us selling lunch and dinner tickets. Neighborhoods marched down the street with dozens of people pushing wheel barrows of food, or pulling wagons or carrying bags of it. Sports teams showed up. Some residents showed up with rolled up coins donating $7 saying it was all they had but wanted to be a part of it. At the end of it all, the town rallied and donated $302,000…So, after telling this story to someone on a set, they said “This is a movie!!”.I’ve gone on this journey over the course of the past year trying to piece it together..My first few phone calls were “Hi. My name is Dave Martineau. I have no idea what I’m doing but here’s my story.” The reaction each time caught me off guard where people would say “That’s amazing! Come tell us about it!!”.I’ve been so fortunate to have many donations to the point where I’m on my home stretch of raising funds for this production. (If there’s anyone out there who would like to invest!!! Just sayin’…) 25% of profits will be given to the food bank. I’ve met with a famous documentary maker. I have former star of Road to Avonlea and Gemini Award Winner Michael Mahonen playing the lead. I’ve met face to face with two VPs of one the world’s largest film distribution companies. It’s been crazy and almost unbelievable but I think we can make a big difference with this film. Even though this ‘rewarding experience’ is not yet at its conclusion, so far it has been very rewarding. LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Twitter I don’t think I have enough breadth of experience to determine my favorite character although a bit quirky of a character seems to be a better fit.We asked Dave what advise he would give to someone just starting out in the acting industry. This is his answer: My advice would be to have no fear of failure. It is only through failing multiple times (some with more talent may fail far less!) that success will be achieved. And, it seems to me, that as much work needs to be put in by the actor, if not more, as the agent puts in.We look forward to learning more about Dave and see what lies ahead.DAVE’S LINKS:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/dave.martineau.94TWITTER: https://twitter.com/DaveMartineau5Written By: Darlene MorrisonIf you are an aspiring talent and would like to be featured in our Aspiring Talent SeriesContact Darlene via email at email@example.comOpen to all (e.g. Actors, Models, Singers, Dancers, Producers, Directors, etc.) Login/Register With:

Rabat – While the 2011 Constitution guarantees citizens the right to access to information, the organic draft bill adopted on July 2014 pains to see the light. On December 28, the House of Councilors finally dusted off the controversial draft. The text is expected to be presented to the Justice Commission of the upper house next week, but will parliamentarians be able to amend it?It’s never too late for freedomThe 31.13 Bill on the right of access to information is about to be finally adopted. After a gestation that lasted too long, the Committee on Justice, Legislation and Human Rights in the Moroccan Parliament finally lead the discussions of the bill this December 28. Presented to the parliament on July 2014, submitted to the House of Representatives on June 2015, adopted in July 2016 and frozen in the drawers of the House of Councilors for more than a year, the 31.13 bill was finally dusted off yesterday, December 28, to be discussed and amended for its final adoption nest week. Having a law on access to information is imperative for Morocco if it aspires to concretely join the member countries of the Open Government Partnership (OGP). Moreover, the final adoption of this law will finally validate its constitutional character (Article 27) which favors its implementation. The OGP candidates must meet 12 points out of 16, minimum eligibility criteria, and Morocco is currently one point away from reaching this bet and finally becoming eligible. Yesterday, the government finally decided that the bill will pass the second chamber’s of the Justice, Law and Human Rights Commission next week. The House of Councilors intend to review and modify the draft adopted by the House of Representatives. They presented more than 65 proposals for amendments on substance and form. For their part, the parliamentarians of the majority parties have joined together to present around 18 amendments. They propose, inter alia, the extension of the right of access to information to legal persons, the obligation to provide clear information within a period not exceeding 50 days, the provision of monitoring indicators of the balance sheet of the concretization of this law, the development of a national strategy, and the strengthening of partnerships with organizations working in the field of transparency and the fight against corruption.Political parties on the lookoutDuring the session held yesterday, the parliamentary group of the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) stressed the need to include the names of public institutions concerned with the duty to provide information to both citizens and businesses. The CGEM is also advocating for the right of companies and civil society organizations as well as foreigners to access information. Another amendment proposed by the group concerns the reduction of the response time of the administrations concerned from 20 to 15 days. While the text is criticized because of the many exceptions it entails, CGEM parliamentarians wish to extend the list of restrictions to the deliberations of parliamentary committees. For its part, the Modernity and Authenticity Party recommends adding the institutions and organizations receiving public financial support to the list of bodies concerned by the right of access to information to enable citizens to control the management of public finances. The PAM advisers propose measures to facilitate access to information including computerization, assistance to persons with disabilities who request this right, reduction of the response time to seven days – decreased to two for urgent cases -, and the need for the independence of the commission responsible for the right of access to information. Restrictions, restrictions, restrictions …As for the exceptions considered too broad and vague by civil society, they include information relating to national defense, internal and external security of the state, and information whose disclosure is likely to affect relations with other states or organizations, as well as the monetary, economic and financial policies of the State. Thus, the text makes it very difficult to access information. In this sense, Transparency Morocco calls for the delimitation of the field of exceptions and the clarity of those related to national security. A proposed amendment of the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) stipulates the removal of certain restrictions such as information relating to relations with other states or international governmental organizations, and those relating to the monetary, economic or financial policy of the state and the deliberations of the Council of Ministries.

Indian External Affairs Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj and Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera and Minister for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mahinda Amaraweera. The Ministers exchanged views on possible mechanisms to help find a permanent solution to the fishermen issues. They agreed on the setting up of a Joint Working Group on Fisheries to meet every three months and a meeting between the Ministers for Fisheries every six months. The delegations would include representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Coast Guards and Navies of both countries. The Minister however said that the boats will not be released since they were seized for entering Sri Lankan waters illegally. The Government has reportedly turned down a request from India to release around 120 boats belonging to Indian fishermen, which were seized for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told The Sunday Leader that India has made a request to release the boats. India’s Union Minister of State Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan had said last week the Indian Centre would secure the release of 115 boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen. Addressing media persons in Rameswaram after inspecting the newly laid Danushkodi Road, he said the ministerial-level meeting between India and Sri Lanka, scheduled for January 2, 2017, would discuss the contentious issue and secure the release of the boats, The Hindu newspaper had reported. On the outcome of the recent fishermen and ministerial-level talks in New Delhi recently, Radhakrishnan, who was part of the Indian delegation, had said it was a good beginning and the first step towards finding a sustainable solution. India and Sri Lanka held Ministerial level talks on fishermen issues last weekend in New Delhi.
Layoffs to head out of the Alberta oil patch, into the boardroom by Jonathan Muma Posted Jan 19, 2016 10:38 am MDT (Stock photo: FreeImages.com) AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that blue-collar workers are being hit the hardest during this oil slump.According to Statistics Canada, more than 14,500 low-income earners in the natural-resources sector were laid off from September 2014 through last year, in fact, job losses among blue-collar workers is nearly quintuple the losses among the highest-paid workers over the same time. However, that may be starting to change as the slowdown drags on.Joe Arvai, Max McGraw professor of sustainable enterprise at the University of Michigan, says traditionally it’s last in first out, and positions that are seen as less skilled and more expendable also tend to get cut first.“It’s only a matter of time before people who have management positions – I don’t know if it will go up as far as the ‘C-Suite’ – but certainly upper and middle management positions will start to get cut,” he said, adding that while laying people off is never easy, the more obvious cuts have already been made.He says the big companies should have seen this coming, and better prepared for it.“If you’re going to be bringing people onboard into a really fast growing sector and a really fast growing economy, you owe it to not only your workers but your economy and the place you live to begin to look at diversity in terms of that market,” he argued.Arvai says this is a teachable moment for what needs to be done going forward, explaining companies need to take this time to restructure their organizations to better prepare for shocks like this in the future.
“But I want every parent to see and be aware of this. Ms Walsh has launched a Facebook campaign Dexy Leigh Walsh with her then eight-month-old daughter “All I think about now is what if I just left it empty she would still be here maybe with just a small bump on her head. It’s all what ifs now. “I have been blaming myself as she passed away due to suffocation as I had packed down the side of her bed with teddies and placed a big one on top of the smaller teddies to stop her from falling down the side of her bed, and she did exactly that but as it was all teddy bears she went under the massive teddy and fell asleep with the angels. Kongiganak residents brought dogs to a free spay and neuter clinic. Photo by Ben Matheson / KYUK.A team of veterinarians brought spaying, neutering, and vaccinations to two YK Delta villages last week. Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, a Fairbanks-based nonprofit visited Tuntutuliak and Kongiganak for the free clinic.Download AudioVeterinarian Paula Gibson is in Kongiginak to spay, neuter, vaccinate, and deworm as many dogs as she can in a marathon day. She lives in Missouri, but grew up in Adak. She’s volunteering with Alaska Native Rural Veterinary. This December morning, her mobile surgical unit is set up in a wide hallway of the community’s washateria with a window overlooking the ocean. In recent years, rural western Alaskan villages have struggled with loose dog populations. It’s not uncommon for some villages to pay young people a bounty of $10 or $20 dollars per dog when things get out of control.Environmental health experts say overpopulation creates the potential for hungry and aggressive dogs and can lead to bites and in some cases maulings. The Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation office of environmental health cites 703 animal bites in the YK Delta between 2007 and 2013.In the lobby with about 10 others was Leann Miller and her small, gold-coated Scarlett, age two.“I don’t know how she feels, maybe she’s excited and scared and nervous at the same time,” said Miller. The community of over 400 located near the mouth of the Kuskokwim a few miles from the coast doesn’t get visits from vets. Residents would need to fly to Bethel for procedures like spays and neuters, which is cost prohibitive for many. The result can be a overpopulation of stray and loose dogs, raising the risk for dog bites, contact with rabies, and a more hungry dogs getting into garbage.Jonathon Otto, a VPSO, brought his German wire-haired pointer hunting dog, Nuka, to be neutered.Sergeant Otto says spaying and neutering is a better alternative to how village dog populations are usually controlled.“They call me and we find someone to do the dog control, they round them up, take them to the dump, and take care of them,” said Otto.Joe Joseph is President of the Kongiganak tribal council, which hosted the clinic in their building. He says the village’s dog control efforts are only a temporary fix.“Neutering dogs, fixing them up, it’s going to help us a lot, I’m glad they’re doing that. For the safety of our kids, for the safety of our elders, I’m glad they’re doing that,” said Joseph. It’s not only dogs they take care of. Hannah Jimmy held a gray cat, thought to be one of three in town.“We call him kitty and sometimes Bobby,” said Jimmy. After Gibson was finished with Bobby, there will be no Bobby Juniors. By late morning, the line was long for pet owners, and Gibson was eager to have as many animals as she could come across her table.Gibson, who also works with Christian Veterinary Mission, says every dog counts.“It may sound like we’re not doing enough when you look at the actual numbers of animals. But when you break it down into the number of puppies a dog can have or a male dog can father, we’re at least stopping that much, so it’s a start and there’s quite a bit more to do,” said Gibson.Angie Fitch of Fairbanks is the director for Alaska Native Rural Veterinary.“One female could have 16 to 20 puppies a year,” said Fitch. After the team sterilized 38 dogs during the visit, the two communities can expect fewer puppy litters and fewer problem dogs.Sponsors of the clinic include Grant Aviation, Delta Western, and the YKHC Office of Environmental health. The group hopes to visit 20 villages a year.

Though they married each other later, reportedly, the Duchess of Cambridge benefitted from their last split. After five years of dating, Prince William and Kate broke up early in 2007. Although she wasn’t happy about their break up, that didn’t stop the Duchess of Cambridge from exploring news avenue and digging more into her own life.In Marcia Moody’s book “Kate: A biography,” the author claimed Kate spent her time attending art exhibits and signed up for a charity challenge that didn’t allow her much time to think about Prince William. In April of that year, the future Duchess of Cambridge set her eyes on joining an all-female rowing team called the Sisterhood. The group, made up of 21 women raised money for children’s hospices by competing in a charity event to row across the English Channel. Kate Middleton, Duchess of CambridgeGetty ImagesFormer Sisterhood teammate, Emma Sayle told Moody the challenge gave Kate the opportunity to make herself a priority. “Kate was very down and I think the training became her therapy. Kate had always put William first and she said this was a chance to do something for herself.”Two months after joining the team, Kate was spotted spending time with William, and three years later the couple confirmed their engagement. During their ITV interview, Kate noted the split may have been just what she and William needed.”I think at the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person, you find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized,” she explained. “I really valued that time for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time!” she further added.Kate and Prince William married in 2011 and are now parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
US President Donald Trump. Photo: FlickrThe US House of Representatives passed a stop-gap funding measure late Thursday that would avert a government shutdown, sending it to the Senate where Democrats have vowed to block it.With the federal government set to run out of money Friday at midnight—the eve of the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration—the bill cleared the House with a 230-197 vote. But prospects appeared gloomy in the Senate, where Democrats eager for leverage on budget and immigration deals were intent on shooting it down.“The House just did the right thing—for our men and women in uniform AND for the millions of children who rely on CHIP,” tweeted House Speaker Paul Ryan following the vote, referring to a popular children’s health insurance program.Ryan urged Senate Democrats to “do the right thing by the American people.”President Trump on Thursday added to the chaos gripping Washington, weighing in on the intense Republican manoeuvring aimed at avoiding a politically embarrassing funding debacle. After a burst of tweets he second-guessed top Republican lawmakers and slapped down his own chief of staff, who had been leading a White House push on Capitol Hill for a budget compromise.Arriving at the Pentagon for a visit, Trump told reporters the government “could very well” shut down Friday. In the event of a shutdown, federal employees for agencies considered non-essential are ordered to stay home until a budget deal is struck, at which point they are paid retroactively. The most recent shutdowns—in 1995, 1996 and 2013 — saw some 800,000 workers furloughed per day.Key government bodies such as the White House, Congress, State Department and Pentagon would remain operational, but would likely furlough some staff. The military would still report for duty, but troops—including those in combat—would potentially not be paid. The finger-pointing had already begun, with each side blaming the other for a failure to reach a budget compromise after three previous funding extensions.“A government shutdown will be devastating to our military… something the Dems care very little about!” Trump tweeted in the morning. And yet in another tweet, Trump criticized the Republican short-term funding measure, opposing a sweetener intended to make it hard for Democrats to vote against it.The sweetener is a six-year extension of CHIP, a program Democrats have worked hard to protect. But Trump insisted: “CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension!”Republican Senator John Cornyn quickly corrected Trump in a counter-tweet: “The current house Continuing Resolution package has a six-year extension of CHIP, not a 30 day extension.”Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House, dismissed the Republicans move on CHIP as “like giving you a bowl of doggie doo, put a cherry on top sundae. This is nothing.”“This CHIP should have been done in September,” she told reporters.Up against a similar deadline last month, lawmakers had passed a short-term resolution to keep the federal government funded until January 20.Many Democrats are already opposed to another short-term fix, leaving Republicans to rely on their own divided caucus to advance the measure. If it fails, Democrats will gain greater leverage to insist on a funding compromise that includes protection from deportation for the so-called “Dreamers,” the estimated 700,000 immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.Negotiations on a bipartisan compromise that includes a fix on DACA, as the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program is known, collapsed in acrimony at a White House meeting last week.Trump’s reported reference to African nations and Haiti as “shithole countries” ignited a still-smoldering political firestorm.White House chief of staff John Kelly met Wednesday with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to make the case that Trump had “evolved” on his signature campaign promise to build a wall the length of the US border.Funding for border security, but not a full-blown wall, was part of the bipartisan budget compromise presented at last week’s contentious White House talks.Participants at the meeting with Kelly quoted the retired general and former head of the Department of Homeland Security as saying Trump was not “fully informed” when he made the wall promise. But Trump hit back on Twitter Thursday: “The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it,” he wrote.“If there is no Wall, there is no Deal!” Trump said in another tweet that described Mexico as “now rated the most dangerous country in the world.”Mexico once again said it would not pay for the wall, despite Trump’s repeated insistence that it will. The mixed messages from the White House prompted a rebuke Wednesday from frustrated Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.“I’m looking for something that President Trump supports, and he’s not yet indicated what measure he’s willing to sign,” McConnell told reporters.“As soon as we figure out what he is for, then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels.”

By Mark F. Gray, AFRO Staff Writer, firstname.lastname@example.orgDescribed as a no-nonsense spiritual leader whose primary focus was on developing strong male leadership and strengthening the family unit, the Rev. Dr. John A. Cherry, and founder of the megachurch known as the From the Heart Ministries Worldwide passed away Feb. 16 in Fairfax, VA.Cherry, 79, gained prominence after taking Full Gospel A.M.E. Zion Church in Prince George’s County’s congregation with him to establish a multi-million dollar religious organization. However, the divorce from the A.M.E. Zion church was a contentious legal affair that involved a massive lawsuit.Rev. Dr. John A. Cherry, who founded From the Heart Ministries WorldwideThe leadership of the A.M.E. Zion church challenged whether the proverbial start-up church could keep the assets it earned while under its governance. Rev. Cherry lost his claim that the assets of the church– including the two sanctuaries, several school buildings and a Lear jet– now belonged to his new congregation. Those legal battles would continue after a March 2000 Prince George’s Circuit Court ruling favor of the denomination, ordering From the Heart to turn over the properties. But the Maryland Court of Appeals overturned the ruling in July 2002 and ordered a new hearing in Circuit Court. From the Heart was also delivered another legal setback when Prince George’s circuit judge ruled in 2006 that Rev. Cherry should return a significant portion of the $40 millions of dollars in real estate assets it claimed but allowed From the Heart to retain ownership of some personal property, including the jet, furniture, cars and television equipment. In 2008 Maryland Court of Special Appeals reaffirmed the previous ruling saying that Cherry agreed to abide by the A.M.E. Zion church’s laws. When he broke from the denomination, most of his congregation followed to become members of From the Heart. Rev. Cherry previously led the church for 18 years and grew it from a small following of 24 people who would meet in a Suitland storefront to a 24,000-member church with three sanctuaries in Temple Hills, Clinton, and the original in Suitland.Cherry is survived by his wife, Diana, of 49 years, his son the Rev. John A. Cherry, who was installed as pastor of From The Heart in 2006 and daughter Sharon Mitchell, who runs the day-to-day operations of the megachurch’s empire.
Monday, May 8, 2017 << Previous PostNext Post >> Appetite for Europe remains strong, says European Travel Commission Share Posted by BRUSSELS — Europe is on the up and up, despite lingering concerns over safety, Brexit and potential policy changes from the new U.S. administration.According to the European Travel Commission’s latest report, ‘European Tourism – Trends & Prospects’, Europe welcomed 615 million international tourist arrivals in 2016, a moderate 2% increase compared to 2015. Almost one in two reporting destinations saw double-digit arrivals growth during the first months of 2017, with Iceland enjoying the fastest growth at +54%, thanks largely to an ongoing surge in air capacity on transatlantic routes.Cyprus (+26%) also recorded high growth, as did Portugal (+25%) and Malta (+23%). Other top performers were Bulgaria (+19%), Finland (+18%), and Estonia (+13%), which were not impacted by security concerns that exist with other European destinations. While Switzerland (+3%) reversed its past trend by taking advantage of its key position as a winter destination, Turkey (-8%) is still seeing a downward trend that began in 2015.More news: Venice to ban cruise ships from city centre starting next month“At times of dwindling market share and increased competition, European leaders must cooperate to collectively formulate appropriate policies and actions aimed at fostering Europe’s image as a tourism destination,” said Eduardo Santander, Executive Director of ETC.Most reporting destinations saw substantial growth from Europe’s largest source markets – Germany and France – fuelled by the ongoing recovery of the Eurozone. Despite uncertainty around the potential implications of UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, tourist arrivals from this market remained solid.Following a boost in US tourist arrivals in 2016 (+6%), prospects for further growth looks high in 2017. Encouraging economic conditions and a strong US dollar against European currencies are expected to entice more American travelers across the Atlantic. An earlier-than-usual Chinese New Year boosted arrivals growth from China so far in 2017, however, this strong performance is expected to return to more typical trends towards peak seasons. that they were in infrastructure financing and construction It is an EPC contractor holds the assets and finances – a 3 in 1 combination business Any bank or institution in infrastructure finance has trouble in India Infrastructure particularly the BOT model has caused a lot of trouble even to us Also because it is an NBFC it has had a contagion effect Because of the IL&FS default there’s pressure on mutual funds The corporates who were providing liquid funds to mutual funds have taken a step back the MFs have become cautious about their investments Many companies where there is a lightest doubts about credit quality – they are having trouble I believe it is a matter of time – a couple of weeks before things return to normal We’re not making any direct purchases from ILFS We are mostly making purchases from NBFCs who are mostly into retail Priority sector is preferred but we are open to buying even non-priority loan portfolio In terms of size this is just 2% of SBI advances it’s not a big number Sundaresan: Reform of the insolvency code has given significant power to the creditor In effect it is empowering banks who are creditors to corporate borrowers How has this evolved Kumar: Insolvency code introduced in 2016 – I consider it the most significant reform that the current government has carried out It’s a new law a new process so obviously there are some issues around how the provisions of the code are interpreted The existing promoters – it is very hard for them to believe that there is a law and a real threat of them losing control of the business It’s never happened before That’s where the fight is but this was all very badly needed Many in the first set of 12 cases have been resolved Our biggest case is under resolution as we speak Only today the letter of intent has been issued by the committee of creditors For the steel sector it has worked very well for the bigger plants where lenders have been able to recover a good amount of money This was helped by two factors – there’s a turnaround in the Indian steel sector and the quality of the plant machinery and infrastructure was of a very good quality and that’s how it has generated a lot of interest among potential buyers There have been amendments in the IBC It will take a little time before the law gets settled Going forward the litigation will come down and the resolution will happen within the given time frame of 180-270 days There were many chronic cases that got referred For this process to succeed it is important that these cases are referred at the earliest sign of trouble Definitely there’s a paradigm shift in the creditor-debtor relationship in India Sundaresan: When the creditor’s hands are strengthened behaviour of the borrowers would change Are you seeing that Kumar: It has already happened Before the code came into being borrowers would say this is your NP – that sentence has disappeared Once an account became NP borrowers would behave like it was the bank’s problem but that has changed Now borrowers are coming forward and trying to resolve As a potential weapon it (the IBC) works very well but we have to be careful in using it as such The threat works much better than the actual resolution This content is being updated with more excerpts from the fireside chat Praveen Chakravarty Nitish Kumar the Chief Minister of Bihar is a very popular leader in that state with virtues of probity in public life and governance focus on development the English press and the larger media narrative would have us believe Do actual voters in Bihar think the same Not according to our analysis Nitish Kumar’s party has only been above the Congress in electoral popularity the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been the state’s most popular party – its popularity preceding Prime Minister Narendra Modi–and no more than 17 voters chose to vote only for Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) according to our analysis of electoral results over six elections since 2004 Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi PTI Over the last decade voters in Bihar have voted in six elections – 2004 Lok Sabha 2005 Vidhan Sabha 2009 Lok Sabha 2010 Vidhan Sabha 2014 Lok Sabha and 2015 Vidhan Sabha Over this period of every 100 Bihari voters roughly 37 voted only for the BJP 30 only for Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) no more than 17 only for the JD(U) and 10 only for the Indian National Congress (INC) In other words Nitish Kumar’s supposed popularity in Bihar is not borne out in electoral numbers So how has Nitish Kumar been chief minister for nearly 13 years since 2005 The answer lies in Nitish Kumar’s manoeuvring of electoral alliances and taking advantage of India’s first-past-the-post electoral system Over the course of six elections in Bihar since 2004 electoral alliance partners have always changed with inter-breeding across the four main parties: JD(U) BJP RJD and INC So it has been difficult to accurately judge voter support for each of these parties But there was at least one instance across these six elections when each of these parties went solo and that gives us a way to reasonably gauge standalone support for the party and/or its leader In 2009 and 2010 the RJD and INC contested on their own In 2014 it was the JD(U) and BJP In 2015 the BJP went solo Here is the electoral map of the six elections: Why the BJP has the least to gain from any alliance The BJP is the most popular stand-alone party in Bihar chosen exclusively by–as we said – 37 of every 100 voters regardless of alliances The BJP’s support in Bihar has been the most stable (37-39 percent) and they appear to have the least to gain from any alliance The BJP’s popularity in Bihar predates Narendra Modi’s 2014 general election victory Lalu Yadav’s RJD is the second-most popular party on a stand-alone basis with roughly 30 of 100 voters Nitish Kumar contrary to perception is the least popular among the three with 17 of 100 Biharis voting for him alone The chart below shows the contested vote share for each of these parties across these four elections and the highlighted vote share is their smallest vote share when they contest on their own To delve further there are 55 assembly constituencies in Bihar that had a JD (U) candidate in each of four elections between 2009 and 2015 In these 55 constituencies only 22 percent of the voters chose JD(U) when it contested alone but when it allied with either the BJP or the RJD 43 percent chose the JD(U) In other words a large number of Biharis only vote for the JD(U) only when it is in an alliance In contrast there were 58 constituencies with an RJD candidate in each of the four elections we mentioned: 33 percent chose the RJD when it stood alone and 45 percent chose it when it entered into an alliance The RJD has a much stronger stand-alone support than the JD(U) What is more striking is that Nitish Kumar is chief minister largely due to Lalu Yadav’s RJD In the 2015 elections when Nitish Kumar Lalu Yadav and the Congress joined hands it was Lalu Yadav’s supporters that turned this alliance to victory The RJD and JD(U) contested in 101 constituencies each as alliance partners in the 2015 election In more than half of these constituencies the JD(U) could not transfer all of its votes to this alliance while the RJD transferred all its votes from 2014 to this alliance in nearly three-fourths of constituencies The direct beneficiary of this transfer was JD(U) which saw its vote share rise from 17 percent in 2014 to 41 percent in 2015 It is clear from the data that Nitish Kumar would not be the Chief Minister of Bihar today had RJD’s core supporters not been as loyal and deserted this alliance Only when Nitish Kumar was left to contest on his own in 2014 did it become very clear that his support base is not nearly as large and loyal as was perceived Nitish Kumar needs either the BJP or the RJD more than they need him As
